A heat pump is a central-heating system that can replace your existing gas boiler. Eligible homeowners may receive £7,500 through the Boiler Upgrade Scheme — and for many suitable homes, that can cover the full standard installation.

What is a heat pump?
Think of it as your new central-heating system.
You do not need to understand the technology before checking your property. An air source heat pump sits outside your home and replaces the job your gas boiler currently does: supplying heat to your heating system and hot water.
Looking for a grant for a new gas boiler?
The Boiler Upgrade Scheme does not fund a standard replacement gas boiler. It is designed to help eligible households move from fossil-fuel heating such as gas, oil or LPG to a heat pump.

Your boiler is replaced
The heat pump becomes the main source of heating instead of a gas, oil or LPG boiler.
Your radiators still heat your rooms
Existing radiators may be suitable. Some homes may need radiator or pipework upgrades, which are assessed before you proceed.
Your hot water is still provided
A suitable hot-water setup forms part of the system design. Where changes are required, they are explained before installation.
Your new heating system could be fully funded
For many suitable homes, the Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant can cover the full standard Air Source Heat Pump installation.
Qualifying off-gas oil/LPG properties
Increased support may currently apply until 31 March 2027 where scheme requirements are met.
How BUS works
The formal application is installer-led.
Where your installation qualifies, the MCS-certified installer handles the Boiler Upgrade Scheme application and the grant is reflected as an upfront discount against the installation cost.

Could your new heating system be fully funded?
For many suitable homes, yes.
Where the £7,500 grant covers the standard installation, there may be no standard installation cost to you. Some properties need additional works—most commonly radiator or pipework upgrades—which can result in a customer contribution. We explain any contribution before you decide whether to proceed.
Funding depends on property suitability and Boiler Upgrade Scheme eligibility. The online property check does not guarantee a fully funded installation or acceptance under the scheme.
